These forgotten spots quietly collect bacteria, dust, mould and allergens that affect your home's air and hygiene. Here are seven of the most commonly overlooked areas — and what to do about each.
1. The washing machine
It cleans your clothes, so surely it cleans itself? Unfortunately not. Front loaders especially trap moisture, detergent residue and lint in the drum, door seal and filter. Over time that creates mould and the musty smell that transfers onto your 'clean' laundry.
2. The rangehood filter
Most people wipe the outside of the rangehood occasionally; almost nobody cleans the filter. That metal or mesh filter traps cooking grease, and after months it clogs — reducing airflow, creating a fire risk and becoming a real hygiene issue right above where you cook.
3. Doorframes and the tops of doors
We clean doors; we almost never clean the top of them or the frames. These horizontal edges collect dust constantly and sit at exactly the wrong height — too high to notice, too easy to skip. In hallways they gather a surprising amount of grime.
4. Light switches and power points
Among the most-touched surfaces in any home — every person, every day, many times over — yet rarely wiped. Skin oils and grime build up on the plates and covers and linger there for weeks between cleans.
5. Under and behind furniture
The sofa gets moved maybe once a year, if that. The space underneath and behind large pieces collects dust, pet hair, lost items and — if there's any moisture — mould. It's also a favourite hiding spot for dust mites, which thrive where nothing gets disturbed.
6. Bin lids and recycling containers
We empty the bins; we almost never clean them. Kitchen bin lids are touched with dirty hands constantly, and the inside collects residue, bacteria and odour even with a liner in place.
7. Bathroom exhaust fans
The exhaust fan is meant to pull moisture out and prevent mould — but when the grille clogs with dust (which happens faster than you'd think), it stops working properly. The result is exactly the humidity and mould it's supposed to prevent.
A note on deep cleaning
These seven are the spots most commonly missed in a regular clean — and they're all part of what a proper deep clean covers. If your home hasn't had one in a while, a professional service resets everything back to baseline, including the easy-to-overlook areas.
