Someone's coming over in twenty minutes. You don't need a deep clean — you need the house to feel calm and cared for. The trick is to ignore everything that doesn't show and spend every minute on what does.
Minutes 0–5: clear the surfaces
Visual clutter reads as 'messy' faster than actual dirt. Grab a basket, sweep the kitchen bench, coffee table and entry table into it, and stash it in a bedroom. Flat, clear surfaces do most of the work.
Minutes 5–12: the two rooms that matter
Guests see the living area and they use the bathroom. That's where your time goes.
- Wipe the bathroom sink, tap and a quick pass on the toilet
- Fresh hand towel out
- Plump the couch cushions and fold the throw
- Quick wipe of the kitchen bench
Minutes 12–17: floors
A quick vacuum or sweep of the main walkway — entry, living room, kitchen. Skip the bedrooms; nobody's going in there.
Minutes 17–20: the finishing touches
“The last three minutes are about smell and light, not dirt.”
- Open a window or two for thirty seconds of fresh air
- Turn on a lamp instead of the harsh overhead
- Empty the kitchen bin if it's visible
